She spent her life caring for others, but the heartbreaking fate of this 32-year-old mother has left her entire family devastated… Her grandmother’s emotional words have brought many to tears

A 32-year-old mother who was killed in a suspected domestic violence attack in New York is being remembered as a devoted parent whose kindness touched many lives.

Shatisha Dade was shot on the evening of July 31, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she died the next day.

Ramone P. James, 36, of Buffalo, whom the district attorney’s office identified as her boyfriend, was arrested Sunday, Aug. 2. He was subsequently charged with one count each of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. On the day of his arrest, investigators executed a search warrant at a residence on Kiefer Street in Buffalo, where prosecutors allege police recovered an illegal pistol.

At his arraignment Sunday, James pleaded not guilty through his attorney. He was denied bail and is due back in court on Aug. 31. His attorney declined to comment when reached by PEOPLE.

Dade’s maternal grandmother, Beverly Anderson, told WKBW-TV that her granddaughter worked as a health aide for elderly people and aspired to become a nurse. Her 13-year-old daughter, Serenity, was her world, Anderson said.

“She was a beautiful young lady,” Anderson said. “She didn’t deserve anything like this.”

Anderson said Dade’s death has devastated heir family.

“I never thought in my life that I would have to bury one of my grandchildren,” Anderson told the station. “Keep praying, that’s all I can do, to keep my daughter strong because my daughter is going through a lot. She’s going through a whole lot.”

“I want you all to know the woman she was, what kind of beautiful spirit, soul she had,” she added. “That’s what I want people to know.”

Serenity had recently graduated eighth grade, according to a GoFundMe launched to help support her and offset Dade’s funeral expenses. Dade was “so proud to witness” her daughter graduate, the fundraiser says.

The fundraiser remembers Dade as someone whose warmth, kindness and compassion touched everyone she met. She loved to cook, especially “big soulful dinners,” and “always found something positive to say about others,” per the fundraiser.

“She had a smile that could light up any room and a spirit that brought comfort and joy to those around her,” the GoFundMe says. “No matter the situation, she always found something positive to say about others and had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved.”
