Remains found in suitcase along rural road ‘not human’, police reveal

Police have revealed a shocking update after a couple found what was believed to be a woman’s decomposing body inside a suitcase.

A “decomposing body” discovered in a suitcase in regional NSW is not human, police have now revealed.

Investigators initially believed the remains, found inside a suitcase along a rural road near Oallen in the NSW Southern Tablelands on Sunday, belonged to a woman.

However, NSW Police Superintendent Linda Bradbury said on Monday morning that the remains were not human.

“We’ll still continue our inquiries to see how this came about, of course, and see what we can find out from the remains or the object there,” she said.

Police at this stage do not suspect any crime has been committed.

Superintendent Bradbury said investigators had only received confirmation from forensics about 15 minutes prior.

She said more forensic work needed to be done to identify the remains, and police did not know whether they were an animal.

“So some good news here, that we don’t have a suspicious death of a human on our hands,” she said.

“They were mistaken for a human originally.

Superintendent Bradbury did not confirm if the remains were of an animal, or if someone was trying to play a hoax.

She explained the members of the public who found the bag thought there was a human inside.

“We have our forensics police officers look at the remains as well. Of course, we don’t like to disturb them too much in situ, particularly facing inclement weather yesterday and today,” she said.

“So the idea is to maintain the integrity of it.

We’ve been able to collect the remains and take them to investigations at forensics to determine that they are not human.”

Superintendent Bradbury said investigators had “maintained the integrity of a crime scene to a tee”, and police did not regret issuing media statements saying it was a female body that had been found.

Police had no more details to share about how long they thought the suitcase had been near the roadside.

The grim discovery was made by a couple out for a weekend drive near the small village of Oallen.

Speaking on the Today show earlier on Monday, Superintendent Bradbury said it was a “shocking discovery”.

She said the couple “were on a weekend drive, as a lot of people do over the weekend and stopped for a break.”

The road was not a route of heavy traffic but was “travelled frequently”, she said.

“We’re conducting a number of inquiries to assist us in locating the identification of the female, and also how she ended up in that location,” she said earlier on Monday.

“But we are relying a lot on forensic evidence. Unfortunately, the female remains have been subject to a state of decomposition.”

The suitcase was found about 1pm Sunday on the unsealed Wolgon Rd, near Oallen, about 40km southeast of Goulburn.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the suitcase was under a pine tree on the fringes of dense bushland, a few metres from the road.

The suitcase has been taken away for forensic examination as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Superintendent Bradbury said officers would continue to canvass the area on Monday.
