SH0CKING DOUBLE LIFE EXPOSED: MELBOURNE NURSE’S SECRET CHATS AND $390 PAYMENT ALLEGEDLY LED POLICE TO H0RRIFIC ANIMAL AB-USE CASE

A former nurse paid cash, handed over a bottle of Maker’s Mark whisky and fed two female horses apples and pears before raping them in a Leongatha stable.

Justin Mackley, 57, was sentenced in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to a two-year community correction order after he pleaded guilty to a rolled-up charge of bestiality.

Mackley, who was born in New Zealand, abused horses Kissy and Luna on multiple occasions after he paid their owner Timothy Slaney.

The court heard Mackley, known as ‘Breakfast JJ’, joined a Telegram chat group created by Slaney where members could view and share bestiality material.

Slaney provided users with access to videos, photographs and livestreams of the acts.

He also provided members with access to his farm in Leongatha – a town in rural Victoria already scarred by the triple murders carried out by poisoner Erin Patterson – for the ‘purpose of engaging in bestiality’ against Kissy and Luna.

Investigators seized multiple devices where they discovered the Telegram chat group.

Police also ascertained that Mackley had transferred $390 to Slaney’s PayPal account between October 2021 and June 2025.

Police discovered multiple photos of Slaney committing bestiality which had been sent to Mackley’s phone.

Detectives also uncovered multiple messages that ‘identified’ how Mackley visited Slaney’s farm to rape Kissy and Luna on December 30, 2023, and April 1, 2024.

The court heard ‘arrangements’ were made for Mackley to visit the farm and he was to bring an ‘apple and a pear and your penis’.

Slaney sent Mackley a message asking if he remembered where the ‘horses were located’.

‘Yep, should be able to find it. Just getting apples. Be there soon,’ Mackley responded.

After the rape on December 30, Slaney thanked Mackley for the ‘mystery gift’ he left and asked ‘whether you enjoyed seeing the girls’.

‘Yes, totally did,’ Mackley replied.

After Mackley raped the horses in April, he left a bottle of Maker’s Mark in Slaney’s car as a ‘gift’.

Victoria Police raided Mackley’s Melbourne home on September 2 last year and seized an iPad which contained child abuse material.

Mackley, who was a registered nurse at the time of the offending, admitted to police that he paid $390 to abuse the horses on multiple occasions.

He also told investigators he had known Slaney for about seven years.

Mackley, who also pleaded guilty to possession of child abuse material, told police that Slaney had ‘gone quiet’ on the chat forums, so he checked court lists and discovered he had an ‘upcoming court matter’.

The now sacked nurse informed the other group members Slaney had been arrested and the ring moved quickly to delete their chats.

Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz said Mackley’s horse rape was not ‘opportunistic offending’.

‘It was transactional in nature, involving payments to Mr Slaney for access to bestiality material and opportunities to engage in such conduct,’ Magistrate Mykytowycz said.

‘It was planned, requiring travel to Leongatha and pre-arranged meetings. It was purposeful, with gifts being left for Mr Slaney and/or the horses following the visits.

‘Whilst there is no evidence of visible trauma or injury to the horses from the digital penetration, that does not operate as a mitigating factor. Rather, it is simply the absence of an aggravating feature.’

At a previous hearing, Mackley’s lawyer submitted there was ‘no evidence of injury to the animal or distress to the animal’.

‘Just because there is no evidence of injury or obvious signs of distress to a horse, doesn’t mean to say that distress did not occur,’ Magistrate Mykytowycz said at the previous hearing.

‘When it comes to bestiality, the issue whether an animal is injured… or obvious signs of distress, is not mitigating.’

On Thursday, Magistrate Mykytowycz denounced Mackley’s attempts to cover his tracks.

‘I do regard your act of notifying members of the chat group of Mr Slaney’s arrest and encouraging deletion of evidence as an aggravating factor,’ she said.

‘At a minimum, it demonstrates an understanding that the conduct occurring within that group was morally wrong, if not legally wrong.’

The court heard Mackley completed secondary schooling in New Zealand before moving to Australia and obtaining an arts degree from Monash University.

He later worked as an advertising copywriter in Tasmania before returning to Melbourne where he completed a Bachelor of Nursing.

Mackley worked as a registered nurse for 13 years up until his arrest, and has been unemployed since.

A psychologist found Mackley had ‘deviant sexual interests’ and ‘escalating pornography use’ brought on by ‘loneliness and social isolation’.

Mackley also suffered from ‘occupational burnout’ and ‘difficulties with emotional intimacy’ while he also had an ‘incomplete appreciation of harm’.

‘In respect of the bestiality offending, she [the psychiatrist] described a longstanding animal-related sexual interest that escalated from fantasy and online exposure into real-world behaviour when opportunity became available,’ Magistrate Mykytowycz said.

Magistrate Mykytowycz spared Mackley a jail term in part due to the assistance he provided police.

‘Most significantly, your admissions concerning the bestiality offending supplied evidence that would otherwise have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the prosecution to prove beyond reasonable doubt,’ she said.

Mackley was convicted, handed the two-year order and made a registered sex offender for 15 years.

‘Animals are vulnerable and dependent upon human beings for their welfare,’ Magistrate Mykytowycz said.

‘The Court must denounce conduct of this nature and send a clear message that such behaviour will attract punishment.’

Slaney, who has pleaded guilty to multiple charges including bestiality, will face a pre-sentence hearing at the Latrobe Valley County Court on October 5.
