A pregnant teenager was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend weeks before she was due to give birth, authorities in California said.
The 17-year-old, who was approximately 32 weeks pregnant, was visiting San Diego from Arizona and staying with family at a short-term vacation rental when she was shot around 1:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, according to a press release shared by the San Diego Police Department.
Officers who responded to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls found the girl unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to a local hospital, where her baby was delivered via emergency cesarean section, police said.
The baby remains in critical condition, while the teen was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
While police did not name the victim, her family identified her on a GoFundMe campaign as Jariah Edwards.
She was remembered as a “bright” and “loving young woman” who was preparing for the arrival of her first child. Edwards’ loved one wrote that she was allegedly “tracked down by her ex-boyfriend” and “lost her life to senseless violence.”
“Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of her mother, sister, family, friends, and most importantly, her newborn baby girl, who is now fighting for her life,” the GoFundMe reads.
Edwards’ family is now hoping to raise funds toward funeral expenses and medical needs for her newborn.
Police have since arrested Edwards’ ex-boyfriend, Trevon Williams, in connection with the case. Police identified Williams as 19 in their news release. However, online jail records reviewed by PEOPLE list his age as 21.
They allege Williams, who is also from Arizona, traveled to San Diego separately and met up with the victim outside the rental, where he shot her. Williams allegedly then fled on foot to a “nearby canyon,” the release states.
Police also said they found a semi-automatic handgun at the time of Williams’s arrest.
“Detectives are actively investigating the incident, including processing the scene and interviewing witnesses,” police said, per the release. “Williams will be booked into San Diego County Jail for murder.”
Online jail records reviewed by PEOPLE show Williams, 21, was booked into jail that Saturday on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession or transportation of a machine gun, and discharging a firearm. He’s being held on no bail, according to the jail records.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Wednesday, June 3. It’s unclear if he has retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the fatal incident to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
