Two teen girls died and three other teens were injured after a car crashed into a tree on a California roadway over the weekend.

On Sunday, May 17, just after midnight local time, officials received reports of a single-vehicle crash on Scott Road, not far from Deer Creek Hills Nature Preserve, in Sloughhouse, ABC affiliate KXTV, NBC affiliate KCRA and CBS News reported. When first responders arrived, they discovered a 2023 BMW X4 vehicle had crashed into a tree and was on fire.

The driver, a 16-year-old girl, and a passenger in the front seat, a 14-year-old girl, both died in the crash, according to the reports.

Passersby were able to pull three other teens — two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old — out of the burning vehicle.

“Witnesses had stopped at the scene of the crash and pulled all three teenagers from the backseat before the vehicle became engulfed in flames,” Officer Angie Monroe of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) told KCRA.

The teens were transported to nearby hospitals with moderate to serious injuries, according to the outlets.

Officials said that speed was a factor in the crash, but they’re still investigating if alcohol or drugs were involved, according to the reports.

One of the teens who died has since been identified as 16-year-old Ariyonna Orozco, family members confirmed to KCRA and KXTV. Her mother told KXTV that the teen was full of life and loved making funny videos.

The day after the fatal crash, Elk Grove Unified School District confirmed to the outlet that four of the teenagers were current students, while the fifth had previously attended the district.

The CHP and the Elk Grove Unified School District did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts are with the teens’ families, friends, classmates and all those affected,” the district told KXTV, adding that support services are being offered for students and staff.

In an interview with KCRA, Lt. Brian Maynard, commander of the CHP East Sacramento Area office, said the incident is an urgent reminder to take care on the road.

“This tragic crash is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can change on the roadway,” Maynard told the outlet. “We encourage all drivers to remain attentive behind the wheel, obey speed limits, and make safe decisions every time they drive.”
