A serious aviation incident unfolded in South Australia on Tuesday after a small aircraft crashed into a hangar at Parafield Airport, setting off a large fire and prompting an emergency response. Police said the crash occurred at approximately 2:10 pm near Kings Road in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

Initial reports indicate the aircraft struck the hangar while attempting to land, though the exact circumstances leading to the impact remain unclear. Emergency services, including multiple fire crews, were quickly deployed to the site as thick black smoke began billowing into the surrounding area. Authorities ordered evacuations in the immediate vicinity, while advising nearby residents to remain indoors due to smoke and potential airborne hazards.

Fire, Evacuations And Eyewitness Accounts

The crash triggered a significant blaze inside the hangar, with smoke visible from a distance across the northern Adelaide region. An eyewitness, identified as Ben, told ABC Adelaide that the scale of the response indicated a major incident.

“It looks like a large fire in an aeroplane hangar… I’ve seen multiple fire trucks going through — this is probably the fifth one now,” he said, describing heavy emergency movement toward the site.

He added that thick smoke was pouring from the structure, noting, “You could see the front of the hangar billowing out black smoke… it was quite large — you could see some sort of fuel,” suggesting the fire may have been intensified by aviation fuel.

Authorities confirmed that the immediate area was evacuated as a precaution, though there has been no official confirmation on injuries or fatalities at this stage.

Airport Closure And Ongoing Response

In response to the incident, airport authorities shut down all operations at Parafield, halting incoming and outgoing flights as emergency crews worked to contain the fire and secure the site.

An airport spokesperson said the facility was aware of the crash and was coordinating closely with emergency responders. “Parafield Airport has been closed to all air traffic,” the statement said, adding that full support was being provided to agencies managing the situation.

Officials have not yet confirmed how many people were onboard the aircraft or whether anyone was inside the hangar at the time of impact. Investigations are expected to focus on the aircraft’s approach, mechanical condition, and pilot actions in the moments leading up to the crash.

The situation remains fluid, with emergency services continuing operations on the ground. Further updates are expected as authorities assess damage, account for those involved, and determine the cause of the crash.
