‘I’m going to need a shot’

During the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on May 10, with 38 laps to go, Busch radioed his team with an urgent request .

‘Can somebody try to find Bill Heisel, the doctor guy? Tell him I need him after the race, please,’ he said.

When asked where he wanted to meet the doctor, Busch replied: ‘Uh, bus. I’m going to need a shot.’ .

According to the TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G‑forces and elevation changes at the New York road course .

Despite his illness, he finished the race in eighth place.

‘You never know when the last one is’

Just five days later, on May 15, Busch climbed into a truck at Dover Motor Speedway — and won .

It was his 69th career Truck Series victory, extending his own all‑time record. And it would be his final win.

In a post‑race interview that now feels hauntingly prophetic, Busch was asked how many wins he wanted before walking away.

‘You take whatever you can get, man,’ he said. ‘You never know when the last one is going to be, so cherish them all. Trust me.’ .

Those words have since been shared thousands of times across social media as fans grapple with the sudden loss.

‘He was fierce, he was passionate’

Earlier on Thursday, Busch’s family announced he had been hospitalised with a ‘severe illness’ and would miss this weekend’s Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway .

Hours later, NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing, and the Busch family released a joint statement confirming his death .

‘Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch,’ the statement read.

‘A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled, and he cared deeply about the sport and fans.’ .

‘His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal “Rowdy Nation.”’ .

A record‑setting career cut short

Busch’s statistics place him among the immortals of motorsport.

He won 234 races across NASCAR’s three national series — the most in history . His 63 Cup Series wins rank ninth all‑time, ahead of legends like Dale Earnhardt .

He was a two‑time Cup Series champion (2015, 2019) and holds the all‑time records for most wins in both the Truck Series (69) and the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (102) .

In February 2026, Busch became NASCAR’s most frequent competitor by logging his 1,300th start across all three series .

The racing world reacts

Tributes poured in from across motorsport.

Denny Hamlin, a longtime rival and friend, wrote on social media: ‘Absolutely cannot comprehend this news. We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB’ .

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said in a statement: ‘Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family.’ .

Fans, too, have flooded social media with grief.

‘What do you mean Kyle Busch passed away?’ one fan wrote on X .

‘Rest in peace Kyle Busch. Gone way too young,’ another posted .

‘A huge loss for the racing community’

Tasha Kummer, a racing fan who met Busch in Anderson, South Carolina, this month, remembered him as ‘the nicest driver I’ve ever talked to’ .

‘I was taken aback at how nice and genuine he was — he was so easy to talk to,’ she said.

‘It’s a huge loss for the racing community. He will forever be known as one of the best, a legend. You never know when that final checkered flag falls — so live your life pedal to the metal.’ .
