The juvenile driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and arrested, according to authorities

The crash occurred at 85th Avenue and International Boulevard just before 11:15 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 16, the Oakland Police Department confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

Police said the investigation revealed the vehicle “was traveling at a high rate of speed” when it made a “westbound turn onto International Boulevard, striking a parked vehicle and several pedestrians in the area.”

Three victims died at the scene, while three other pedestrians were transported to local hospitals.

The driver, who was also taken to the hospital, was a juvenile, according to police. He was arrested in connection with the incident.

The Oakland Fire Department also posted about the incident the following morning on X, noting at the time that the suspect had minor injuries.

The suspect allegedly tried to walk or run away from the scene, but was stopped and detained by witnesses until officers arrived, fire officials told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The identities of the three victims have not been publicly released by authorities, according to the outlet.

The Oakland Fire Department warned locals to “avoid the area” in its statement on the morning of Sunday, May 17, with the Chronicle stating that a large police and fire presence remained at the scene.
