While William and Kate were stunned at the news, I understand the couple plan to “rise above it” and not let the Sussex drama derail their “commitment to service and duty”.
Sources tell me that all the Waleses have been through with Kate’s cancer diagnosis over the past few years “has put everything in perspective”.
William continued to be a working royal while his father and wife both had cancer and won’t be distracted by the Sussex sideshow for a second.
Kate slowly returned to public duty despite her ill-health with a string of high profile engagements across Britain and even Italy this year.
The couple will have a full programme of jobs after the summer break, while preparing for George to start at Eton next month.
I would not be at all surprised if the Waleses saw this as a chance for their children George, Charlotte and Louis to finally build a relationship with their Sussex cousins.
William is big enough and mature enough to not want his nephew and niece to be affected by his fallout with their father.

Harry and Meghan had already fled the UK with their two children, denying them the opportunity for that family togetherness.
Now, while Kate and Wills pledge not to be distracted by the incoming Sussex sideshow, some royals are thought to be concerned about Harry and Meghan’s aims.
The Sussexes walked away from royal duty after their bid for a hybrid royal role was rejected at the 2020 Sandringham Summit.
Worries at the time, shared by Kate and Wills, were that the Sussexes would use their royal status to cash in.

There were fears this could risk the unbearable situation of Netflix cameras and the like at engagements, or even the Sussexes using appearances at events to plug jam and flower sprinkles.
While neither is believed to have broken the Megxit terms regarding financial endeavours in the US, Harry has run his own “half-in, half-out” system — returning to the UK as the Duke of Sussex to appear at his patronages while also working privately for money.
It is understood that the King is resolute in his ambition that the couple do not return as working royals or pick up any money from the Sovereign Grant — which is effectively taxpayer funding via profits from The Crown Estate.
Harry has no plans to return as a working royal but sources admit some future elements of their move back to the UK remain “up in the air”.
Just four months ago, speaking to The Sun and ITV in Ukraine, Harry confusingly rejected the description of him being “not a working royal”.
