102-year-old man’s family demand ‘justice’ after he was ‘pushed over at pub’ and died

The family of a 102-year-old man who died after allegedly being “pushed over” as a band were playing in a pub are demanding “justice” for his death.

Widower Phillip Ormerod, who was a regular at the pub near his home in Cwmbran, south Wales, was said to have asked for the music to be turned down during the performance. But it is claimed Phillip, who had dementia, was pushed away and suffered critical injuries after tumbling backwards and hitting the floor. He later died in hospital.

Speaking from his father’s end-of-terrace home, son Robert said his father would walk almost half a mile to the Crow’s Nest pub or nearby social club two or three times a week. The great-grandfather was known by the younger punters and would often have drinks bought for him.

Retired civil engineer Robert said: “What happened is not nice. The pub has changed a lot over the years. It has become a youngster’s pub. Me and my brother would visit our father regularly and clean the house.

“His eyesight had deteriorated and he had been diagnosed with dementia two or three years ago. He could be difficult with having dementia. He walked to the pub two or three times a week. He was a beer drinker and I suppose some people saw him as a bit of a character at his age.”

Robert said he grew up in the home where his father lived since 1960. Dad-of-two Phillip, who had a career as a design draftsman, lived at the property alone since his wife died 40 years ago. Phillip had worked as toolmaker during World War II but later joined the Merchant Navy.

Robert added: “It has changed a lot since I grew up here and of course a lot of my father’s generation are no longer here. We just hope for some justice.”

A neighbour, who lives on the close in Cwmbran, South Wales, said: “It is terribly sad. He was very independent and didn’t like to have help from anybody.

“He would often get lifts home from the pub by people who wanted to make sure he got home safely. He had to wait until 4am for an ambulance after it happened. He was out every day, two or three times a day. He would have been 103 next month.”

Emergency services were called to The Crow’s Nest in Cwbra, at around 10.25pm on Saturday August 1.

Gwent Police said: “We’re continuing to appeal for witnesses following a report of an assault at The Crow’s Nest pub in Cwmbran at around 10.25pm on Saturday 1 August.

“A 102-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment. The man, who can now be named as Phillip Ormerod from Cwmbran, has since sadly died while in hospital.”

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Shelley Comley said: “We understand the public interest in this incident but want to remind people that not only is this an active criminal investigation but there is a family at heart of it processing the loss of a loved one.

“Please consider the impact that inaccurate or speculative comments – particularly online commentary – could have on them and the ongoing investigation as a whole.”

“Anyone who was in the pub between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday 1 August and hasn’t yet spoken to police is asked to contact us”

The pub shared the police appeal, adding: “If anyone was in the pub that night and witnessed this please get in contact with the police.”
