A Saturday morning that began with the typical allure of golden sunshine and the briny scent of the ocean at Coogee—a coastal suburb in Sydney’s east—abruptly transformed into the setting of a horrific nightmare. Leah Stewart, a 35-year-old mother, faced a life-altering encounter with mortality when she was viciously mauled by a great white shark while swimming just 30 meters from the shoreline.
A Harrowing Encounter and a Fight for Survival

At the time of the attack, Stewart’s friend was nearby, occupied with caring for Stewart’s one-year-old daughter on the sand. Her husband, who was abroad on business, immediately boarded a flight back to Australia upon hearing the devastating news and is currently remaining by her side.
As the boundary between life and death grew perilously thin, Charlie Verco—a 25-year-old lifeguard who was off-duty at the time—responded with decisive bravery. Witnessing the terrifying scene, he utilized his stand-up paddleboard to approach the victim, pulling her from the shark’s jaws and bringing her to shore just as she began to lose consciousness. Verco recounted that harrowing moment to ABC News: “The water got very bloody and she got taken under and after a few seconds, popped up again and the shark had let her go.”
Once on the sand, Stewart was stabilized before being airlifted in critical condition to St Vincent’s Hospital.
The Intensifying Debate Over Shark Culling
The heartbreaking incident has reignited a fierce national debate across Australia regarding the coexistence of humans and oceanic predators. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has taken a hardline stance, advocating for the implementation of shark culls with the firm declaration: “so wrong that we don’t put people before sharks.”
Under pressure from public sentiment, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has not ruled out enforcing interventionist measures, pledging to invest in a surveillance system using AI-integrated drones to regularly monitor coastlines for the presence of great white or bull sharks.
However, the community remains deeply polarized. One segment of the public supports culling, with one resident remarking: “Too many attacks, their numbers are increasing and they are coming in closer. I used to love a bodysurf, wouldn’t do it now.” Another added with conviction: “Humans must remain as the apex species of this world despite what the greenies and wokies that will complain. I say WE MUST CULL.”
Conversely, those opposing the measure raise significant concerns regarding environmental equilibrium and the inherent risks of human activity in the ocean: “Leave the sharks alone, we are going into their environment, they are not coming into ours,” one commenter noted. Another argued: “Absolutely not! They balance the marine ecosystem. As humans entering the water in Australia you have to be aware that when you go in [the water], you don’t know if you’ll get out.” Many maintain that entering a shark’s natural habitat carries an inherent risk that humans must be prepared to accept.
The Arduous Journey to Recovery
Through a GoFundMe campaign, Joshua Stewart—the victim’s brother—has shared poignant updates on his sister’s condition, describing her injuries as both “severe” and “life-threatening.”
Joshua shared the grim reality of her situation: “She has multiple bites across her arms and legs, lacerations and fractures throughout her body, and extreme blood loss. Leah remains in a critical condition on life support and has undergone multiple surgeries in the days after the attack. Tragically, her treatment has required the amputation of her arm, and more surgeries are scheduled for the coming days.”
Although Leah is currently fighting to hold onto her life, the path ahead will be grueling. The funds raised are intended to cover future surgeries, the procurement of prosthetics, and the extensive rehabilitation therapy necessary to improve the young mother’s quality of life. The valor of the first responders and Leah’s own resilience are currently the subject of deep sympathy and prayers from across the nation.
