A massive has erupted in the Newcastle sparking a massive response with more than 60 firefighters dispatched to battle the blaze.

Emergency crews were called to the corner of Denison St and Maitland Rd in the suburb Mayfield shortly after 3.30pm on Monday.

Vision from area shows the flames reaching four-storeys high erupting from a whitegoods warehouse situated between homes and apartment buildings.

Police established a 200m exclusion zone as crowds gathered while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

The effort was still ongoing about 7.30pm though it has not spread to other buildings.

Road closures are expected to last well into Monday night.

‘Residents within 1km of the location are urged to close doors and windows to mitigate any smoke, fumes or embers entering their homes,’ NSW police said.

What caused the blaze will be the subject of an investigation.

There have also been electricity outages in the area with Ausgrid working to restore services.

There are no reports of injuries connected to the fire.
