Mexican authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the murder case of 27-year-old Carolina Flores Gómez after a taxi driver confessed to assisting her mother-in-law, Erika María Herrera, in escaping the scene immediately after the killing.
Carolina Flores Gómez was shot multiple times inside her upscale apartment in Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood on April 15, 2026. Her mother-in-law, Erika Herrera, is the primary suspect in what prosecutors are treating as a femicide. Following the shooting, Herrera allegedly fled the apartment with several suitcases. Police say the taxi driver picked her up shortly afterward and drove her to a location outside the capital.

According to statements given to investigators, the taxi driver admitted he was contacted by Herrera shortly after the crime. He has reportedly revealed to police the location where he dropped her off, which authorities believe served as her initial hideout. An Interpol Red Notice has already been issued for Herrera, who remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
The driver told authorities that Herrera appeared agitated and was carrying heavy luggage when he collected her. He claimed he was not initially aware of the seriousness of the situation but later recognized Herrera from media reports and decided to cooperate with police. His testimony is now considered a key piece of evidence in tracking down the fugitive.
Carolina’s husband, Alejandro Sánchez, who was present in the apartment at the time of the shooting, remains a person of interest. He reportedly waited nearly 24 hours before alerting authorities, claiming he delayed because the couple’s eight-month-old baby was still breastfeeding. Medical experts have cast serious doubt on the feasibility of that explanation.
Video footage from a baby monitor inside the home reportedly captured parts of the confrontation between Carolina and her mother-in-law. Prosecutors are examining whether Alejandro played any active role in concealing the crime or assisting his mother’s escape.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across Mexico, with many condemning what they see as cold-blooded family violence. Carolina Flores Gómez, a former beauty queen crowned Miss Teen Universe Baja California in 2017, was remembered by friends and family as a devoted young mother.
The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the search for Erika Herrera is now international. Interpol’s involvement is expected to help coordinate efforts with law enforcement agencies in countries where she may have connections or potential safe havens.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about Herrera’s current whereabouts to contact police immediately. A substantial reward has been offered for information leading to her arrest.
As the investigation continues, detectives are analyzing phone records, financial transactions, and additional witness statements in an effort to determine the full sequence of events and any possible accomplices. The taxi driver is currently cooperating fully and has not been charged with any crime at this stage.
The brutal killing of Carolina Flores Gómez and the subsequent escape of the main suspect have once again highlighted concerns about femicide and domestic violence in Mexico. Her family continues to demand swift justice and full accountability for everyone involved in the crime and its cover-up.
