An elderly man has allegedly been shoved to the ground by a Coles staff member during a heated dispute over a discount.

The incident allegedly unfolded about 11.15am on Monday after the customer queried the price of a discounted cake product at Coles Broadway in Glebe, in Sydney’s inner west.

A witness told 7NEWS.com.au the man, who said he was 81 years old, returned to the store with a cake he had bought a day or two earlier, saying he had been charged full retail price instead of the advertised discounted price.

When he asked a staff member in a Coles uniform to correct the price, the employee allegedly told him there was nothing he could do and asked the elderly man to “go away”.

“I just want the discount. Can you refund me?” the man allegedly said.

The argument continued for about five to 10 minutes before the witness heard a commotion and turned to see the elderly man falling heavily onto the floor.

The witness said he believed the man may have hit his head when he landed.

Video taken shortly afterwards shows the elderly man lying on the floor beside a person in a Coles uniform as nearby shoppers watched on, before more staff members gathered around.

According to the witness, the staff member involved walked away immediately after the incident.

After briefly filming the aftermath, the witness said he stopped recording and went over to help the elderly man.

He alleged the man had blood on his hand, possibly from a minor cut, and he complained that his arm “didn’t feel very good” and probably needed an X-ray.

The elderly man was conscious but appeared to be in pain, the witness said.

The witness also alleged no ambulance had arrived by the time he left the store.

NSW Police said they were not informed of the incident.

Coles told 7NEWS.com.au it is aware of the incident and is investigating.

“We are aware of an incident at our Broadway store this morning and are looking into it as a priority,” a spokesperson said.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and team members is very important to us, and any incident of this nature is taken seriously.

“As this matter is still being reviewed, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the situation.”
