An 11-year-old boy lost his right hand after an alligator attack in Umatilla, Florida.

During a family fishing trip to Nelson’s Fish Camp, Brodie Terry lost his right hand on June 27 after an alligator attacked him. The incident happened when Terry was releasing a fish he’d caught back into the river. An 8-and-a-half-foot alligator pounced on him and, according to the Daily Mail, a family member rescued Terry from the reptile.

“Brodie’s father jumped into the water on top of it and tried to pry his mouth open,” Andrew Raines told News 6 Orlando.

“The gator rolled, and that’s what ultimately severed Brodie’s hand.”

Brodie was then rushed to the hospital, where surgeons tried to save what they could, but resorted to amputating his hand at the wrist, which took multiple operations.

Brodie was released on Friday. He returned home to Pennsylvania with his family, where he is still recovering.

Raines explained to News 6 that the injury is particularly devastating for Brodie, because he loved to fish and play baseball, saying that the hobbies were “the two loves of his life.”

“If he wasn’t playing baseball, he was fishing,” Raines said.

Brodie’s family described the attack as a “life-altering event” on a GoFundMe page they set up to help cover his medical expenses.

“This tragic accident has not only changed Brodie’s life but has also placed a tremendous burden on his family as they navigate the aftermath,” the page description reads. “Brodie’s passion for fishing, baseball, and football has always brought him joy, and now he faces the challenge of adapting to his new circumstances while holding onto the things he loves.”

“Your donation will help his family focus on his recovery and give Brodie the opportunity to pursue his passions once again,” the fundraiser notes.

The attack occurred on the same day that a beloved female construction worker living in Orlando was killed during another horrific alligator attack. Brittany Clark was hiking in Little Big Econ State Forest with her boyfriend and friend when they decided to swim in a river in the afternoon.

911 audio from the attack revealed how a gator approached the trio before attacking Clark and tearing off both of her arms.

A medical examiner’s report obtained by the Daily Mail gave more details, including how her boyfriend fought the animal even as it dragged them both underwater into a “death roll.” Alligators engage in death rolls to subdue prey, violently twisting onto their backs and attempting to pull the victim underwater to drown them.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shared with the public that the alligators involved in both the attacks on Clark and Brodie have been euthanized.

Attacks on humans are uncommon in the U.S., according to the Florida Wildlife Commission. However, alligators are especially territorial during mating season, which lasts from April through the end of June.
