A Melbourne family is mourning the loss of Lavanya Chappa, a 39-year-old mother of two who has been remembered as a compassionate, devoted parent after her fatal stabbing at her home last week.

Police allege Ms. Chappa was attacked at her residence in Vermont, in Melbourne’s east, at about 10 p.m. on July 7.

The accused has been charged with murder. The allegations have not been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Tributes have continued to pour in for Ms. Chappa, who worked as a software analyst and was widely admired by family, friends and colleagues.

Her cousin, Govind Gudivada, described her as someone whose kindness touched everyone she met.

“Lavanya was a loving mother, a cherished daughter, a devoted family member, a valued colleague, and a dear friend to so many,” he wrote in an online fundraiser established to support her children.

He added that she would be remembered for her warmth, compassion and the positive impact she had on those around her.

Victoria Police allege Ms. Chappa’s two children, aged 13 and seven, were inside the home when the incident occurred.

Authorities confirmed neither child suffered physical injuries.

Police later charged Ms. Chappa’s 39-year-old husband with one count of murder before he was taken to hospital under police guard.

Community Rallies Around the Family

An online fundraiser created to assist the family had raised nearly $50,000 within days as friends, relatives and members of the wider community offered their support.

Many donors left messages remembering Ms. Chappa as a caring mother whose children were the center of her life.

Renewed Focus on Domestic Violence

The tragedy has also renewed calls for greater action to prevent domestic violence across Australia.

According to Australian Femicide Watch, 36 women have allegedly been killed in domestic violence-related incidents across the country so far in 2026.

Australia’s National Domestic Violence Commissioner, Michaela Cronin, described the recent deaths as both heartbreaking and deeply frustrating.

“It’s heartbreaking and frustrating that we are not able to do more to intervene and help prevent them,” she told ABC News.

She said Australia must continue having a national conversation focused on preventing domestic violence before more lives are lost.

Investigation Continues

Police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Ms. Chappa’s death.

Support services remain available for anyone affected by domestic or family violence, while the community continues to rally around her two children as they face an unimaginable loss.
