A woman has died after falling while rock climbing with friends.

A young woman has died after falling while rock climbing with friends in western Victoria.

The 24-year-old from NSW suffered critical injuries after falling from Mount Arapiles, known as Organ Pipes, about 11.30am on Monday.

She was winched from the site by a specialist Air Ambulance Victoria crew and taken to a nearby paddock, where she was treated for more than an hour.

She was then flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with upper-body injuries, where she later died.

Horsham Police Acting Senior Sergeant Dale McIvor said on Tuesday the woman died overnight.

“It’s unfortunate, these incidents on the rock happen from time to time, but it’s just sad when they do,” he said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Mount Arapiles rises about 140m above the Wimmera plains, about 335km northwest of Melbourne.

It is widely regarded as one of Australia’s top rock climbing destinations, with more than 2000 routes.
